Cignal HD Subscriber Review

Cignal HD Receiver
Last month, I wrote about Cignal Digital TV’s launch in Davao. Thanks to a Cignal HD voucher (free satellite dish, HD receiver, and free MSF for 3 months) which I got from Andrew, I am now subscribed to Cignal’s HD combo package at Php1,290/month. That’s 21 standard definition (SD) digital channels plus 8 high definition (HD) channels.
After three days of being subscribed to Cignal TV, here are my thoughts:
- Being completely digital, you get program information like movie title, program synopsis, and screening time when you view a specific channel like HBO HD. There’s also a “What’s On” feature where you can see the program offerings from your favorite channels playing right that very moment — imagine a channel and program guide displayed in real time on your TV.
- You can also set your HD receiver (also called set-top-box) to automatically go to a specific channel on a specific time to make sure you don’t miss your favorite shows or movies.
- The favorites feature is very handy as it lets you bookmark your favorite channels.
- Parents who want more control over what their kids watch on TV are now empowered with Cignal’s Parental Control feature. Channels not suitable for children can now be locked.
- Cignal’s current channel line-up is acceptable but could use more variety. ANC, Discovery HD, and JackTV would be nice additions.
- HD channels are good enough but not at par with the picture quality of my Popcorn Hour HD media streamer. HBO HD, Histrory HD, and National Geographic HD all look good but needs more contrast and sharpness.
- Digitally-enhanced HD channels like Sony, ESPN, and Star Sports are too soft to be considered HD. I understand these channels are SD channels upconverted to HD, perhaps Cignal’s technical people can adjust the settings to improve the picture quality to HD standards.
- The Cignal logo plastered in every channel is a bit distracting. Maybe they can make it less obtrusive by making it transparent like National Geographics HD’s logo.
- Sometimes the audio-video sync is off by a few milliseconds. There’s an option to change the audio delay in the settings menu but the options are pretty limited.
Nevertheless, I still find my Cignal SD-HD combo subscription worth the money considering they offer the most number of HD channels in the country. They also offer pay-per-view programs like Pacquiao fights at competitive prices. Cignal Digital TV is a new entrant in the direct-to-home pay television industry so I guess there’s a lot of room for improvement in terms of channel offerings and quality.

Hi sir lyle, just looking for a review for a Cignal Sat Cable coz Im planning to install one in my new home this end of the month, Nov.2010. You give me a good idea about your review why should I subscribe to Cignal. Is there anything you can add more since you made this review last year. Any other exp or problem you encounter. Thank you very much Mr. Lyle.

Since my initial review, Cignal has added quite a number of quality channels to their line-up and have created more flexible plans.
For the highest-tier subscription (P1,290/month), NEW channels include:
-Star World
-Star World HD
-Star Movies
-Star Movies HD
-Discovery Channel
-Discovery Turbo
-Discovery HD World
-Food Network Asia HD
-NBA Premium HD
-ESPN HD
-ESPN News
-Net25/GEM HD (test broadcast)
-Fox Family Movies
-Fox
-tvN (Korean)
-Al Jazeera
-MSNBC
Now, all HD channels are true HD unlike before where Cignal used upscaling equipment to enhance regular channels.
Also, HD channels have different programming compared to their standard channel counterpart. This means that Star Movies and Star Movies HD aren’t showing the same movies. So, you’re basically getting two movie channels.
In terms of problems, Cignal has been sending me inaccurate billing statements for quite some time now.
I’ve contacted customer service several times to have the error rectified but the error persists. They billed me for Pay-per-view even though I paid for it in advance via their local territory partner.
Another important thing to note is signal problems. Strong rains often render your satellite dish useless as channels get cut off, specially HD channels, when the weather is bad.

Hi Lyle, I’m looking for a cable provider to replace my current and I ended up reading your review.
I just noticed that there’s a red Cignal logo in the upper left or right corner of every channel. Is that always there? Can it be removed in the box menu settings? I’m concerned that it might annoy me in time
thanks!

Hi Mark. Thanks for dropping by. Yes, the Cignal logo is plastered in every channel. I’ve leafed through every menu option I can find in the settings and even asked the tech guy from Cignal if it can be removed. There is no way for us subscribers to remove it.
It’s definitely an annoyance but I eventually got used to it.

HI Lyle, good day, just received a notification email and happy that the thread is still open….Just got and installed the HDMI cignal last Nov.28, 2011 and would you believe, i still didnt get my monthly billing, well, already got one na pala for the bill of dec, i think this is a problem with them, luckily i got a BPI online and just added their name to my bill payment and solved my one problem.
The only reason why I got the cignal provider is to enjoy my 46″ LED 3D TV, for my Living room and my LED projector, for my Master Bedroom, kahit mahal, 1510 pesos/mo, sabi ko kasi, it will be useless buying this TV and Projector if I dont have a full hd channel and so far, I really really enjoy it,
Another problem I got and really get me irritated is when I have a problem on the other box, got additional box for additional 230 pesos, I called the dealer, im here in imus cavite, many times and told them the problem because it always said “Set-up the box” and they just keep and keep in giving me an instruction to what Im going to do in the unit and which I did many times up to the point, i shouted them and tell them to send me a technician because I didnt see any problem in my connection and instead it is in the box itself…and I am right, it is really the box who is having a problem, they pulled out the unit and as what the technician told me, they reprogram it and after 3weeks of using this, I still didnt experience any problem.
Well, hope I did share something for our satellite cable provider and yes, I agree with “Mark”, that cignal LOGO is really annoying and irritated, well, I think this is a marketing strategy so you will not loosing of track of cignal provider, hehehe…

i bought a cignal last march 2010, then after just a year nasira na, pinacheck ko sa technician nila then sira na daw yung tv box….then wala na daw ibang magawa kundi bumili ng bago kasi d daw yun naayos….
bigla nlang yung nasira, palagi nalng nag aapear na technical problems then wala na…sabi kasi nung technician desposable daw kasi ang cignal kaya d pwedeng ayusin…
sayang lang yung money ko, ndi worth it yung pagbili ko kasi almost 5t yung binayad ko tapos just a year masisira na… kainis talaga..

Really helpful reviews! I was thinking of switching from sky to cignal but changed my mind when i read the reviews. At least with sky when the digibox isn’t working i just disconnect it n connect to the ordinary cable and we still have signal.
